It has been called as "Seosan" in the early Joseon Dynasty but it has obtained name of "Inwangsan" from the Sejong period of Joseon kingdom (AD 1392~1910). There are lots of landscape paintings with a background of Mt. Inwangsan thanks to its magnificent scenery. Such as "Jeong Seon's Inwang-jesaekdo" is one of the famous landscape painting which is painted rising fog after rain in the Inwangsan Mountain and it's a designated as a No.1 national treasure of Korea.
Mt. Inwangsan has a tiger story that lots of tigers had lived in the mountain until Joseon Dynasty period. And the tiger has been to Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces as well as nearby private houses and often has been made a fuss. And another story is a biggest incident that 31 heavily armed North Korean guerillas had infiltrated into 500 meters around Presidential office on January 21st 1968. The armed North Korean guerillas tried to attack Korean Presidential residence and assassinate former president Chung-hee Park (5th~9th). So called is that "1.21 Spy Incident" or "Kim Shin-jo spy case" .
At the time, 31 armed North Korean commandos wearing South Korean military uniform were passed several police check points by posing as the Korean military. And continually head to "Cheongwadae (Presidential residence)" and finally reached to Jahamun foothill in the 500 meters away from the presidential office. Then Gyu-sik Cheo who were a chief of Jongno police station blocked them on their way and tried to inspect them. At the very moment, one of the city bus arrived there and stopped behind police because the road was blocked with them. Then these armed communist guerrillas thrown grenade into the bus and gave firing to police include bus by misunderstood as a troops transport vehicle and then scattered into the mountain.
At the time, innocent 7 civilians and 25 soldiers include polices were died in the battle of sweep them and 29 red guerrillas were killed by shooting and one of the red guerrillas ran away back to North Korea. Only survived Shin-jo Kim who was hiding his body among the rocks in the Inwangsan Mountain had surrendered. After that, it was forbidden to enter into Mt. Inwangsan and reopened for citizens from February 24th 1993 but it is still being controlled after sunset..
Odaesan Mountain shows different spectacular viewing with different colors at each season. For examples, plenty species of wildflowers that enchant visitors in spring, green parkway in the shade of green trees to walking along wooden trails in summer, the kaleidoscope of fall colors in mixed with yellow, orange and bright purplish-red in autumn and fantastic snow flowers in the winter creating different spectacular views every season. Odaesan Mountain fall colors begins in early October and peak to peak with gorgeous fall foliage is in mid two weeks of October and it was a stunning view with bright yellow and orange and flaming red leaves of average brilliance about two weeks ago and it will be completely past peak this weekend.
Monk's reciting Buddhist Sutras and sound of moktak (wooden gong) coming out from the Buddhist sanctum was mingled with Buddhist Temple views surrounding by fall foliage and leafs falling in the precincts of the temple makes visitors to immerse in thought about mysteries of nature in related birth and death. When climbed to the top of Birobong that can be feeling a sense of an accomplishment was great with panoramic mountain views from the top and in splashed color dotting the slopes. However, the trails leading to the top is a wide sloped parkway, so anyone can climb to the top regardless gender unless elderly man.

But there is better way to travel Odaesan National Park by rental bus with local residents and they will welcome foreign tourists. Thus fun will be doubled. In fact, it is strongly recommended to travel with local residents. Because it might be a risk of distress by miss directions in great mountain. It is possible if you explore a guest house that provide tour services in Incheon area.
